Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a nonprofit organization that protects, defends, and empowers public-interest journalism in the 21st century. FPF works through a variety of avenues to preserve and strengthen the free speech and privacy rights guaranteed to the press, including developing encryption tools, training newsrooms on digital security practices, advocating for the public’s right to know, and documenting attacks on the press through our U.S. Press Freedom Tracker.

Job Summary

Responsibilities

📍Execute with the deputy director of audience and other stakeholders a strategy for sustained audience growth across platforms, including newsletters, web, audio/visual and social media; 📍Own FPF’s text-based social platforms, namely X, Mastodon, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Facebook and any other emerging social platforms, in addition to newsletters; 📍Identify opportunities to raise FPF’s profile on emerging platforms, including open-standard platforms and the fediverse 📍Execute targeted reach and engagement, including content dissemination and promotion as well as social media campaigns and special projects, and respond to relevant DMs across platforms in a timely manner; 📍Implement these strategies using measurable goals, and prepare internal reports on data points, other indicators; 📍Manage media lists and track media requests; 📍Research and evaluate newsletter and social media platform expansions; 📍Report on and leverage analytics, data intelligence, social listening tools and digital impact figures to inform decision making; 📍Assist the development team in social media fundraising and special projects, as needed; 📍Work with external vendors on website, database design, data visualization, SEO and social advertising, as needed; 📍Capacity building: Train colleagues on new, or existing, digital tools; 📍Other responsibilities as assigned by the deputy director of audience.

Qualifications

📍As FPF’s Social Media Editor, you’re passionate about press freedom and newsgathering rights, have a nuanced understanding of audience analytics and data, and are eager to make these essential topics engaging for a growing audience.

Must Have

đź“ŤA passion for the First Amendment and protecting the press freedom rights of all; đź“ŤAt least 2+ years audience engagement experience, having built newsletters, email lists or other engagement-focused outreach strategies; đź“ŤFamiliarity with native and third-party analytics platforms; đź“ŤExcellent writing and copyediting skills, preferably with experience in AP style, and a strong understanding of copy standards and proofreading methods; đź“ŤGood news judgment and political awareness; đź“ŤA proven ability to translate complex issues into succinct, accessible language for multiple audiences; đź“ŤBasic knowledge or expertise in encryption and secure newsgathering tools; đź“ŤBasic understanding of HTML
